06/01 - 6 miles running
06/02 - 5 miles running
06/03 - 3 miles running and 2 miles biking
Got a great report from my doc. I managed to lower my cholesterol. I'm now as follows:
Total Chol. 136
Triglycerides 88
HDL 45 (That's too low so I have ot work on it)
LDL 73
And I did it all with diet and exercise. No pills. Only wish the diet and exercise resulted in a drop in my weight which is still the same. I'm still very disappointed in that.
I'm thinking about two races for September - a RNR 1/2 marathon in Virginia Beach and a 20 mile trail run. I would prefer a full marathon but I can't find one in September that will work for me. So maybe doing these two races will help get me trained for a full marathon.
All this is just a stepping stone towards getting ready for January's WDW Goofy run.
I also need to train on the bike this summer to be ready to do 56 miles next May for the WDW 1/2 Ironman.
That's pretty much my fitness plan for right now.
I hope that everyone is having an excellent Juneathon.

Tri Disney
We left for Florida on 05/07 and arrived around 2 PM on Friday. We stayed at Fort Wilderness in the cabins. It was our first time staying at the resort. We used the new online check-in service and speeded through the registration process. Then we went to check out our cabin. It was in the 4800 loop which is close to the registration building. The cabin was great. There was plenty of room and we loved having a full kitchen. We stopped at Whole Foods on the way down there and got stuff for breakfast.
The worst thing about the cabin was the double bed. I just find a double to be way too small for Randall and I. We have a king at home and I just feel like I can't move when I sleep in a double. I tried the double anyway Friday night and so I didn't sleep well. Saturday night I slept on the fold down bed in the living room and liked that better. Aidan wanted to sleep in it on Sunday night so I used the bunk bed. It was a little small and my feet hung off the end. But at least I could move.
After we checked out the cabin we decided to go back to reservations and rent a golf cart for the length of our stay. Most people seemed to have them and I thought it would enhance our experience. The cart was great. We loved riding it around the Fort checking out campsites. Aidan loved being able to drive (with Dad's help). It made getting around fast and easy.
Next up we had to dash over to Epcot for our ADR at Chefs de France. I had originally booked Garden Grill (one of Aidan's favorites) and switched to CdF when I found out that Remy would be there. It was worth the switch. Of course, we love eating there too. We had just finished dinner when a cast member came over to our table and introduced Remy to Aidan. They had a cute conversation and we agreed that Remy and his cousins could come and stay with us. If you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing him.
After dinner we raced over to the boat to Hollywood Studios. Anyone that knows me knows what I wanted to do next...the finale of American Idol Experience. Aidan hates Idol and threatened to walk off without us. He changed his mind when I mentioned that we all needed to share and do things each other wants to do.
We got to HS about ten minutes before 7 and just made it in time. The doors were just opening when we got to the theatre. We found a good seat and watched 7 really good performers. I liked the last performer but the audience picked the guy who sang just like the record. Aidan admitted that he liked the show with the voting. He still doesn't want to watch it on TV. [He'll get another chance at IDOL this August when they come to our state. I just bought tickets today. I can't wait to see Adam.]
Anyway...on Saturday we went to Typhoon Lagoon. There were no crowds and we did the roller coaster slides as much as we wanted. We also did the wave pool, other slides and the lazy river. We all tried the Shark Reef for the first time. I liked it but Aidan did not and he refused to do it again. I left the boys at around 1 to head back to the resort for check-in at the EXPO.
Oh, before I go there let me backtrack. When I went to bed Thursday night I threw away my old contacts. I was planning to start with a new pair Friday morning. When I went to open the box Friday morning I realized it only had one lens. ONE. I need my contacts to see distances. I can't drive without them and I didn't want to ride a bike without them (although I wasn't worried about not being able to see in the water for the swim portion...sometimes its better not knowing what's down there). I considered going to a Lens Crafters and trying to get another pair. Then Saturday morning I just decided to see what would happen if I wore one lens in my left eye. It worked. I could drive and see well enough. No headaches either. So I went with that for the race too and I completely forgot about it.
Back to the EXPO...After I got back from Typhoon Lagoon I changed into some shorts so I could ride my bike to the EXPO being held at the Settlement. When I went to pump up my rear tire I found that it was flat. TOTALLY Flat. Yikes. Randall had shown me how to change a tire for the front tire and then I had repeated it with the back tire. Something I had done must have been wrong. I panicked. I didn't know what to do. Randall wasn't there and I had to check the bike in by 5.
So I just walked up to the Settlement (1.3 miles) and asked whether Randall would be allowed into the transition area to help me with the bike after 5. They said what I expected...No. She did suggest that the bike shop guys might be able to help me. They were there at the EXPO to help with bike troubles. I found the guys and told them that the tire wouldn't hold air. The guy looked at me like I was an idiot and said that I would need a tube. I said I had one. He was silent and I just left and went to the EXPO. I guess you're supposed to be at least capable of changing a tire to ride in these races.
I got my bib and shirt and took the bus back to the cabin. The interaction with the bike dude had made me determined to figure it out and change the tire. I decided not to worry about fixing the old tube (Randall could do that later). I took off the rear tire, pulled off one side of the rear tire from the rim (after a bit of a struggle) and then pulled out the old tube. I checked it out. There was a rip right next to the stem.
I then checked my new tube to see if it would hold air. Success. I deflated the tube and worked it carefully into the tire. The worst part is making sure that the tube is not pinched as you put back the tire into the rim. I had so much trouble with the section by the stem. I re-did it at least seven times. When I was done I prayed that the tire would hold air. It did. But would it hold for the race?
Tired, hot and sweaty I got on the bike and rode to Settlement and checked in my bike. The bike racks were well marked by bib number and I found my space easily. I re-checked the air pressure in the tire and left.
By the time I got back to the cabin the boys had returned. We all went out to dinner at the new Sweet Tomatoes in Crossroads. We hadn't eaten at a ST since we lived in California 13 years ago. Aidan and I enjoyed it but I don't think Randall did.
Sunday morning I woke up early, had breakfast and then walked to the Settlement. I went to the transition area and set up my towel with my shoes, helmet, water bottles, etc. I checked the tire again. Still inflated. I walked around making sure I knew the course and going to the bathroom about 4 times. They even had a paper sign on the men's room that it was for ladies from 4AM - 8AM. That was weird but the extra facilities helped.
By 6:45 I was at the swim start in my cap, tri shorts and top. I was placed in the 5th wave with the Survivors. I have no idea why but I was honored to be with them.
The swim started from the beach at the Fort. We all lined up in the water at a buoy. Then they announced our start and we were off. It felt weird to swim in the water. The temperature was perfect but it was cloudy and I didn't like how it felt in my face. I changed my stroke to the breast stroke for awhile while I got comfortable with the water. There were people to help everywhere. On both sides of the course people were in the water, in kayaks and in motor boats ready to help us. They were even handing noodles to people that needed them.
As I swam the course I kept changing my stroke and trying to pick up speed. I was way behind the others in my group and the next wave was overtaking me. The worst part is when other swimmers that are faster decide to cut right in front of you. At that point there is nothing you can do but wait for them to move on.
By the second half of the course I was feeling more comfortable and picked up some speed. The swim part was soon over. I came out of the water a little unsure of whether I should be running through the transition.
I put on my socks and shoes, helmet and gloves, and set off on the bike course. I managed to pass a few people but found a lot of people passing me too. I was disoriented and had no idea how far we had gone. I didn't know how to pace myself for the course. A waterproof GPS watch would have really helped. It seemed like the course ended quickly and it was time for the run.
The run was great. I felt fine and tried to save something for the last mile. Again I had no idea how far I had gone so the race was over before I could push myself.
I did it. My first tri-athlon. It was great. The variety made the race interesting. I finished in about 2 hours which was my goal. My transition time alone was over 10 minutes of that. I now have an idea about what it will take to do the 70.3 Ironman next year.
I can tell that I need to get in better shape. Plus I have the Goofy in January. So I'm looking around now for a local marathon in September.
For anyone considering the Danskin Tri at Disney, I would highly recommend it.

Progress
The bike is finally set up properly. While I still feel some pain in my shoulders it is much milder. I think it's really just a matter of using those muscles. I love the bike and I had a great ride yesterday. My gear all fits great and is very comfortable. I did learn that having on glasses while biking is important unless you want gnats in your eyes.
My running has improved this year. I now run 5-mile sets of 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 5.5 without problems. That's one mile for each speed. The 7.0 is still not easy for me but I can do it for 1 mile. I haven't been working on long-distance running lately since I only need to run a 5K for the triathlon. Instead I have been staying with 5-mile sets and working on speed.
Swimming is still going well. The trick will be doing it in open water with other swimmers. I am still nervous about that (but excited too). I really enjoy swimming and I really think the workouts have helped to improve my overall strength and endurance.
I'm still considering doing a boot camp type workout program for the summer before I start training again for the Goofy. The bootcamp says that they can cut 2-3 minutes off your mile. I'm not too sure about that but I'm willing to try their methods.

Day ???
No change in weight.
But I am still working out. I do a weight and swim workout twice per week. I'm working on learning to swim with a nose plug. I find it extremely uncomfortable and I feel like I can't breath. Swimming in the tri gear (bike shorts) is fine. My goggles work well when I get them adjusted right.
Running is still fine. I try to run 4 days per week with two days where I combine with the bike.
I now have my bike gear and I have tested the bike. The bike is my husband's old Ironman Centurion so it's a very nice bike. The fit is all wrong and my shoulders ached after a 6 mile ride around the hills where I live. I need to work on the fit and getting used to the feeling.
So I'm trying to fine tune everything. I'm still excited about my first triathlon on 05/10.
We will be staying at the FW cabins for the first time since the race is there at the beach. We hope to meet Remi at Chefs de France on Friday night and maybe go see Idol that night. Saturday will be a day at Typhoon Lagoon if the weather is nice. Sunday is the race and hanging out at the resort. We also plan to do the Hoop de Doo that night for the first time. We leave for home on Monday.

Training in week one was great. I managed to do three days of strength training, two days of swim workouts where I swam 56 laps of 25 yards each. I also did 2 bike/run workouts that week. Problems in week one consisted of too much food and still not the right foods.
Week two training was not as good. There was no swimming or strength training. I did run or bike/run six days last week. My food intake was better both in terms of quantity and quality. We are still trying to see what works. I took Rae's advice and I now cook my own oatmeal w/o added sugar and salt. I'm trying to limit the amount of pre-processed foods so that is really helping with salt intake.
The workout today was great except for the seat on the bike at the gym. I'm still getting used to it. I have now ordered all the gear I need to swim and ride and I hope to get out on my bike in about a week.

Day 2
Exercise
5 miles @ 11 minutes per mile
Food:
Flax Oatmeal w/Dried Cherries
Amy's Brown Rice and Vegetables
Morning O's
Mini Pretzels
Sweet & Sour Tofu and Veggie Stir Fry w/ Brown Rice
1/3 Fuji Apple
8 Strawberries
Water
Decaf Coffee
Goal 1,221
Actual 1,595
Over 374
Diary:
I get very hungry when I work out like this. As a result, it is very difficult for me to stick with a diet.
The one thing I have noticed from this plan is that my diet has too much fat, carbs and sodium and needs more protein and fiber. Adding more protein and fiber should really help me feel better.

Diary
I've begun my training for the triathlon. It's just 8 weeks away. I've found that I'm adjusting to sitting on the bike at the gym. I'm still worried about transitioning to the seat on my actual bike. I haven't done any outside training yet. I still need to get a helmet, seat, pedals and tires for my bike. I also need to get some triathlon clothes and shoes. I feel pretty good about my progress at this point.
As for my weight, depending on who I listen to my waist is 2 - 7 inches too big for my health. It's a key area that I am targeting. I'm hoping that I can eat healthier and lose some weight. I'm also working on trying to lower my bad cholesterol. My next test will be in April.
I think it would really help me to reach my goals if I could get into some type of challenge with others similar to the Biggest Loser. Competition is a big motivator for me. I joined The Biggest Loser Club and I hope that it helps me with my goals.
